Answer Details

At each feeding level organisms respire, and respiration releases energy as heat that escapes to the surroundings and cannot be passed on, so most of the energy is lost as heat released by respiration. It is not lost as minerals in the soil or as reflected sunlight, and it is not turned into new producer plants (energy flows one way and is not recycled); the main route by which energy leaves each level is heat from respiration.
