While food and space are plentiful and nothing limits growth, each cell divides and the population doubles again and again, giving very rapid growth. This is the exponential phase, also called the log phase. It is not the lag phase (slow start), the stationary phase (numbers level off), or the death phase (numbers fall); the steady doubling under ideal conditions is the log phase.
