Answer Details

A cylinder shows no change in mass only when there is no net movement of water. This happens when the surrounding solution has the same water potential as the cylinder, so water enters and leaves at equal rates. In pure water the cylinder would gain mass, in the most concentrated solution it would lose mass, and it would not dissolve.
