Energy Flow

Overview

Trace the energy in any meal back far enough and you arrive at the Sun. Almost every living thing is ultimately powered by sunlight, captured by plants and then passed from organism to organism before draining away into the surroundings as heat. Understanding this one-way flow explains why food chains are short and why producers are everywhere.

In this short lesson you will state that the Sun is the principal source of energy for biological systems, and describe how energy flows through living organisms, from sunlight to chemical energy and finally out to the environment.
