Answer Details
Respiration is the chemical release of energy from nutrients inside living cells. In its aerobic form it uses oxygen to break down glucose, releasing energy and producing carbon dioxide and water as waste. The three clues given, taking in oxygen, giving out carbon dioxide, and using glucose to free energy, are exactly the inputs and outputs of aerobic respiration, so together they describe respiration and no other single process. Growth is an increase in size and dry mass, and excretion is the removal of wastes made in the body; each is only one consequence, not the energy-releasing reaction itself. Remember that gas exchange (oxygen in, carbon dioxide out) is the visible sign of the respiration happening in every cell.
