Concentrated salt solution has a lower water potential than the cytoplasm of the organism. Water therefore moves out of the cell by osmosis, across the partially permeable membrane, into the more concentrated surroundings, so the organism shrinks. Water would only enter if the outside were more dilute; salt particle size is irrelevant to whether water moves; and osmosis does not depend on respiration.
