If the strips get longer, the cells must have taken in water and swollen. Water enters potato cells by osmosis when the surrounding solution has a higher water potential than the cell sap. Losing water would shorten the strips, and active transport of salt or release of sugar do not increase length. The extra length is direct evidence that the cells gained water by osmosis.
