A potted plant had its soil and pot sealed inside a plastic bag so that only the leaves were exposed. The whole set-up was weighed every 2 hours. Why did the total mass fall over time?

With the soil and pot sealed inside a bag, no water can escape from the soil, so the only way the set-up can lose mass is through the exposed leaves. The steady fall in mass is caused by water vapour lost from the leaves by transpiration. Roots absorbing gases would not reduce mass, a plant cannot respire away its whole mass, and mineral ions do not evaporate; the lost mass is transpired water.
