Answer Details

Strong salt solution has a lower water potential than the onion cell sap, so water leaves the cells by osmosis. The cytoplasm and cell membrane shrink and pull away from the cell wall (plasmolysis), so under the microscope you see the cell membrane pulled away from the wall. Plant cells with walls do not burst, and chloroplasts dividing or the nucleus leaving are not osmotic effects.
