Question 1 Report

The diagram shows the two potato cylinders at the start of the experiment. Two potato cylinders of equal mass are left for one hour: cylinder P in distilled water and cylinder Q in concentrated sugar solution. Which prediction is correct?

Answer Details

Distilled water has a higher water potential than the cell sap, so cylinder P gains water by osmosis and increases in mass. Concentrated sugar solution has a lower water potential than the cells, so water leaves cylinder Q and it loses mass. Hence P gains mass and Q loses mass; the other predictions get the direction of water movement wrong for one or both cylinders.
