The diagram shows a group of alveoli at the end of a bronchiole.
A good gas exchange surface needs a large surface area (so more gas can diffuse at once) and a thin, moist lining (so the diffusion distance is short and gases can dissolve before crossing). The alveoli have both, which makes them efficient. Thick walls with a small area, a dry surface with no blood supply, or a cartilage ring covered in cilia would all slow or prevent exchange, so the large moist area is what makes the alveoli work.
