Describe three health benefits that a teenager could gain from participating in regular physical activity. For each benefit, identify whether it is a physical, social or mental benefit. [6]

Answer Details

Answer:

  1. Stronger bones and muscles from weight-bearing activities such as running or jumping - this is a physical benefit. Regular exercise stimulates bone growth and increases muscle strength, reducing the risk of injury and conditions like osteoporosis later in life. [1+1]
  2. Improved concentration and reduced stress from regular activity - this is a mental benefit. Exercise releases endorphins which lift mood and reduce anxiety, and improved blood flow to the brain helps a teenager focus better at school. [1+1]
  3. Making new friends through team sports - this is a social benefit. Being part of a team teaches cooperation and communication, and provides a sense of belonging that is especially important during the teenage years. [1+1]
