Question 1 Report

State two reasons why a performer needs to drink water before, during and after physical activity. [2]

Answer Details

Answer:

  1. To replace fluid lost through sweat - during physical activity the body sweats to cool down, and if this lost fluid is not replaced, the performer risks dehydration which impairs both physical and mental performance. [1]
  2. To regulate body temperature - adequate hydration supports the body's cooling mechanisms (sweating and blood flow to the skin), preventing dangerous overheating during intense or prolonged exercise. [1]

Other valid responses include: to maintain blood volume so the heart can pump efficiently, to prevent fatigue and reduced performance, or to prevent muscle cramps that result from electrolyte imbalances.
