Question 1 Report
Fig. 1 shows the elbow joint of a performer during a sporting activity.
(a) Identify the type of joint shown at the elbow. [1]
(b) Name the movement taking place when the forearm moves upward toward the upper arm at this joint. [1]
(c) Give one sporting example where this movement at the elbow is important for performance. [2]
(a) Type of joint at the elbow
The elbow is a hinge joint. Like a door hinge, it allows movement in one plane only, permitting flexion (bending) and extension (straightening) of the forearm. [1]
(b) Movement when the forearm moves upward
When the forearm moves upward toward the upper arm, the angle at the elbow decreases. This movement is flexion. [1]
(c) Sporting example of elbow flexion
A valid example is performing a bicep curl in weightlifting. During the lifting phase, the forearm flexes at the elbow to raise the weight toward the shoulder. The biceps muscle contracts to produce this movement, and the ability to flex powerfully at the elbow is essential for controlling and lifting the load. [1+1]
Other acceptable examples include the pulling phase in rowing (pulling the oar handle toward the body), a boxing guard (keeping the arms bent to protect the head), or the upward pull in rock climbing.
