Question 1 Report

When a performer begins to exercise, several immediate changes take place in the body.

(a) Describe two short-term effects of exercise on the respiratory system. [2]

(b) Explain what is meant by 'redistribution of blood flow' during exercise. [2]

(c) State why the body sweats during vigorous physical activity. [1]

(d) Describe how muscle fatigue affects a performer during prolonged exercise. Suggest one way the performer could reduce the impact of muscle fatigue. [3]

Answer Details

(a) Two short-term effects of exercise on the respiratory system:

  1. Breathing rate increases to take in more oxygen and expel more carbon dioxide, meeting the heightened metabolic demands of the working muscles. [1]
  2. Depth of breathing increases (tidal volume rises), allowing a greater volume of air to be exchanged with each breath and improving the efficiency of gas exchange at the alveoli. [1]

(b) Redistribution of blood flow means that during exercise, blood is directed away from non-essential organs such as the digestive system and kidneys. [1] Instead, it is redirected to the working muscles, where it is needed to supply oxygen and glucose for energy production and to remove waste products such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid. [1] This process is controlled by vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels to non-essential areas) and vasodilation (widening of blood vessels to active muscles).

(c) The body sweats during vigorous physical activity to cool down and regulate body temperature. As sweat evaporates from the skin surface, it removes heat, preventing the body from overheating. [1]

(d) Muscle fatigue causes the muscles to feel tired and heavy, and the force they can produce is reduced. [1] This leads to a decline in performance: the performer may slow down, lose coordination, or find it harder to maintain correct technique. [1] One way to reduce the impact of muscle fatigue is to maintain proper hydration throughout the activity, as dehydration accelerates fatigue by impairing the delivery of nutrients and removal of waste products. [1] Other valid suggestions include taking regular rest periods or ensuring adequate nutrition before and during exercise.
