Question 1 Report
(a) State what is meant by the term mineral storage as a function of the skeleton. [1]
(b) Describe how the skeleton provides support for a performer during physical activity. [2]
(c) Give one example of a bone that acts as a lever during movement in a named sport. [2]
(a) Mineral storage as a function of the skeleton means that bones store essential minerals, particularly calcium and phosphorus. These minerals give bones their hardness and strength, and when the body requires them (for example, for muscle contraction or nerve function), they can be released from the bones into the bloodstream. [1]
(b) The skeleton provides support by acting as a rigid framework for the body. [1] This framework holds the body upright, gives it shape, and allows the performer to maintain good posture and balance during physical activity, whether standing, running, or performing complex movements. [1]
(c) An example is the femur (thigh bone). [1] In football, the femur acts as a lever when the player kicks the ball: the quadriceps muscle contracts and pulls on the femur via its tendon, rotating the lower leg about the knee joint to strike the ball with force. [1]
