(b) Describe two responsibilities of a coach when carrying out a risk assessment for an outdoor training session. [4]
(a) Definition of risk assessment
A risk assessment is the systematic process of identifying hazards in an environment or activity. [1] It also involves evaluating the likelihood and severity of harm that each hazard could cause, and deciding what steps or control measures should be taken to reduce or eliminate the risk. [1]
(b) Two responsibilities of a coach during a risk assessment
Responsibility 1: The coach should inspect the training area for potential hazards before the session begins. This includes checking for environmental dangers such as uneven surfaces, waterlogged ground, broken glass, or unsafe weather conditions. [1] Having identified any hazards, the coach must decide what action to take, for example moving the session to a safer area, marking off a dangerous zone, or postponing the session if conditions are too risky. [1]
Responsibility 2: The coach should check that all equipment to be used is in good condition and suitable for the planned activities. This means examining items such as goalposts, cones, balls, and any protective equipment for damage or wear. [1] If any equipment is found to be damaged or unsafe, the coach must ensure it is repaired, replaced, or removed from use before the session starts. Using faulty equipment puts participants at unnecessary risk of injury. [1]
