Question 1 Report
Explain why a high level of physical fitness is important for a performer taking part in competitive sport. Give two reasons in your answer. [3]
Why fitness matters in competitive sport
Physical fitness is the body's ability to meet the demands of a physical task. For a competitive performer, a high level of fitness is essential for several reasons.
Reason 1: A fit performer can train harder and for longer periods without breaking down. This is because their cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems are better adapted to cope with repeated high-intensity sessions, meaning they can accumulate more quality practice and improve faster. [1+1]
Reason 2: High fitness levels delay the onset of fatigue, allowing the performer to maintain technique, decision-making, and power output throughout an entire match or event. A less fit competitor may lose concentration or slow down in the closing stages, giving the fitter performer a decisive advantage. [1+1]
Other acceptable reasons include: reduced risk of injury (a well-conditioned body is more resilient to the stresses of training and competition); faster recovery between sessions or rounds of competition; and improved overall quality of performance. [max 3]
