(b) Give one example of concurrent feedback a gymnast might receive during a performance. [1]

(c) Describe three ways a coach could use different types of feedback to help a young basketball player improve their free throw shooting. For each type, explain how it would help the performer. [6]

(d) Suggest why too much feedback could have a negative effect on a beginner learning a new sport. [2]

Answer Details

(a) Terminal feedback is feedback that is given after the performance or skill has been completed. [1] For example, a coach discussing a tennis player's serve technique after they have finished their service game.

(b) An example of concurrent feedback a gymnast might receive during a performance: the gymnast can feel whether their body position is correct while performing a move (intrinsic/kinaesthetic feedback) [1], or a coach calling out instructions such as "point your toes" during a routine.

(c) Three ways a coach could use different types of feedback to help a young basketball player improve free throw shooting (two marks per type: one for naming/describing, one for explaining how it helps): [6]

  1. Positive feedback after a successful shot - telling the player "well done, your elbow was straight and your follow-through was excellent." This builds confidence and reinforces the correct technique, making the player more likely to repeat it. [1+1]
  2. Knowledge of results - showing the player their shooting percentage (e.g. "you scored 7 out of 10 today, up from 5 last week"). This helps them track improvement over time and set measurable targets for future practice. [1+1]
  3. Knowledge of performance via video replay - showing a recording of their shooting technique so the player can see what their arm action, body alignment and release point actually look like. This helps them identify specific areas to correct that they might not feel through intrinsic feedback alone. [1+1]

(d) Too much feedback can have a negative effect on a beginner because it can be confusing and overwhelming. A beginner has limited capacity to process multiple pieces of information at once. [1] If they receive too many corrections simultaneously, they may not know which aspect to focus on first, leading to frustration, loss of confidence, or paralysis by analysis where they overthink every movement.
