Question 1 Report

(a) State what is meant by 'active leisure'. Give one example. [2]

(b) Suggest two ways that a local council could encourage more residents to use leisure time for physical activity. [2]

(c) Explain how having a positive experience of physical education at school can influence a person's leisure choices later in life. [4]

Answer Details

(a) Active leisure

Active leisure is using free time to take part in physical activities or sport rather than sedentary pursuits. It involves deliberate physical movement during time that is not committed to work, school, or domestic responsibilities. [1]

Example: playing tennis at a local court, going for a bicycle ride, swimming at a leisure centre, or attending a fitness class. [1]

(b) Council strategies to encourage physical activity

Any two valid suggestions, for example:

  • Build or improve local parks, outdoor gym equipment, or cycle paths so residents have free, accessible places to be active. [1]
  • Organise free community sports events, park runs, or family activity days that lower the cost and social barriers to participation. [1]

(c) Positive PE experiences and lifelong leisure choices

A positive experience of physical education at school creates enjoyment and a genuine interest in physical activity. When a young person finds lessons fun and feels successful, they are more likely to view sport as rewarding rather than a chore. [1]

Good PE teaching also builds competence and confidence in a range of movement skills. A student who learns to swim, play a racket sport, or follow a fitness programme gains the practical ability to continue those activities independently. [1]

As an adult, someone who enjoyed PE is more likely to seek out sports clubs, gym memberships, or recreational activities. The habit of being active, established during school years, carries forward into leisure choices. [1]

Friendships formed through school sport can also continue into adult leisure. Playing in a team or attending a club with friends provides both social motivation and accountability that sustains participation. [1]
