(a) Difference between an open and a closed skill
An open skill is performed in an unpredictable or constantly changing environment. The performer must continuously adapt their actions in response to external factors such as opponents, teammates, weather, or playing surface. [1]
A closed skill is performed in a stable, predictable environment where conditions remain the same each time. The performer can plan and execute the skill without needing to react to changing circumstances. [1]
(b) Sporting example of an open skill
An example of an open skill is dribbling in football. [1] It is classified as open because the player must constantly react to the movements of opposing defenders, the position of teammates, and the changing game situation. No two dribbling situations are identical, so the performer must adapt their speed, direction, and technique in real time rather than following a fixed routine. [1]
