Question 1 Report

(a) Describe three reasons why a cool-down is important after a training session. [3]

(b) A football player performs a cool-down after a match. Suggest two activities they could include in their cool-down and explain the benefit of each. [4]

Answer Details

(a) Three reasons why a cool-down is important after a training session:

  1. It helps to remove lactic acid and other waste products from the muscles. Continued light movement keeps blood flowing through the muscles, flushing out the by-products of intense exercise. [1]
  2. It prevents blood pooling in the legs and veins. If exercise stops suddenly, blood can accumulate in the lower limbs, causing dizziness or fainting. A cool-down keeps the muscle pump working to return blood to the heart. [1]
  3. It reduces the risk of muscle soreness (delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS) in the hours and days following training, helping the performer recover more quickly for the next session. [1]

(b) Two cool-down activities for a football player with their benefits:

  1. Light jogging around the pitch for 5-10 minutes. This keeps blood circulating through the muscles, which helps to flush out lactic acid and gradually lowers heart rate back towards resting level. [1 + 1]
  2. Static stretching of the major muscle groups (quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, hip flexors). Holding each stretch for 15-30 seconds helps to maintain or improve flexibility and reduces muscle tightness, decreasing the chance of stiffness or injury. [1 + 1]
