The term 'composition' in art refers to?

In art, composition refers to the arrangement of visual elements within a work. It is the way an artist organises lines, shapes, colours, textures, and forms on the picture plane or within a three-dimensional space to create a coherent, effective work of art. Good composition guides the viewer's eye, creates balance or deliberate tension, and determines how the parts of the artwork relate to each other and to the whole.

The medium used refers to the materials or tools an artist works with (oil paint, watercolour, charcoal, clay), which is a separate concept from how elements are arranged. The subject of the art is what the artwork depicts or represents (a landscape, a portrait, an abstract idea), not how the elements are organised. The colour palette is the range of colours chosen for a work - while colour choice contributes to composition, the palette alone does not define it. Composition encompasses all visual elements and their arrangement, not just colour.
