Fig. 1 shows the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile. The dam produces renewable energy for Ethiopian cities and may allow electricity sales to neighbouring countries. However, villages upstream were relocated while the reservoir filled. Farmers downstream are concerned that changes to the river’s flow could affect irrigation and food production.
