Read Fig. 1, a migration decision diagram based on interviews in a village in Nepal. It follows a young adult deciding whether to move to a city in another country for construction work. The diagram shows possible remittances sent home, training costs, separation from family, and the risk of irregular work. Money sent home may pay for school fees, safer housing and a water pump. However, the village can lose skilled workers and older relatives may take on more farming. The study is being used to discuss international migration and uneven development.
