Question 1 Report

9230-p2-global-2

The diagram shows the journey of a cotton T-shirt designed in an international fashion office and sold in cities in Europe. Cotton is grown in India, yarn is spun in China, fabric is cut and sewn in Bangladesh, then the finished T-shirt travels by container ship to a distribution centre. A campaign group uses this supply chain in its study figure about globalisation and consumption. It argues that consumers should consider both jobs created and environmental costs. Use Fig. 1.

(a) Identify the country in Fig. 1 where the T-shirt is manufactured. [1]
(b) Describe one benefit of this international trade for Bangladesh. [1]
(c) Explain two ways in which the supply chain can increase global environmental impacts. [2]

In a global study of food security, Fig. 1 shows a family farm in the Sahel using a stone contour bund after several seasons of unreliable rainfall. The low wall follows the slope and slows water moving across the field. Millet is planted behind it, with young acacia trees at the field edge. The farmer has limited money for fertiliser and irrigation, but a nearby agricultural adviser has suggested composting crop waste. The farm supplies food for a household of eight and any surplus is sold at a market in a growing urban centre.

(a) Identify the crop shown in Fig. 1. [1]
(b) Describe how the contour bund changes the movement of water across the field. [1]
(c) Explain why compost could improve food security for this household. [3]

Answer Details

Cotton T-shirt supply chain

(a) The T-shirt is manufactured in Bangladesh. [1]

(b) International trade can create employment and wages in Bangladesh. Export income and skills development are also valid benefits. [1]

(c) Transporting the finished T-shirt long distances uses fossil fuels and releases carbon dioxide. Cotton farming can also require large amounts of water and may involve fertiliser or pesticide use. [2]

Sahel food-security study

(a) The crop is millet. [1]

(b) The contour bund slows surface runoff, holding water on the slope for longer and allowing more infiltration. [1]

(c) Compost adds organic matter and nutrients to the soil. This improves fertility and can improve water retention, so millet yields can rise. More yield gives the household more food to eat and potentially a surplus to sell. [3]
