A coastal fishing village in the Philippines is taking part in a study of plastic consumption. Fig. 1 shows rubbish collected from a beach after the monsoon. The largest items are discarded drinks bottles, food wrappers, fishing line and broken foam packaging. A river enters the sea nearby, carrying waste from an urban market upstream. Village leaders want refill stations for drinking water, bins at the harbour and a ban on thin plastic bags. Fishers are concerned because tangled plastic can damage nets and reduce the value of their catch.
