Fig. 1 shows a delivery depot where electric vans are charged from solar panels on the roof. The logistics business is considering replacing diesel vans as each vehicle lease ends. The owner expects customers to compare the environmental policies of competing delivery businesses.

(a) Identify the renewable energy source shown in Fig. 1. [1]
(b) Explain one way electric vans could reduce environmental damage in towns. [2]
(c) Explain one reason why the business should consider the full cost of changing its fleet, not only the fuel cost. [2]
(d) Which stakeholder group may value the cleaner delivery vehicles most? [1]

Answer Details

(a) [1] The renewable energy source is solar energy or solar power.

(b) [2] Electric vans have no exhaust emissions while being driven. This can reduce local air pollution in towns and may reduce carbon emissions, depending on how the electricity is generated.

(c) [2] Fuel cost is not the only cost of changing fleet. The business may have to pay for charging points, vehicle leases, maintenance or staff training. These costs affect whether the change actually improves profit.

(d) [1] Local residents may particularly value cleaner delivery vehicles. Customers or government would also be acceptable stakeholder groups.
