9225-p1-training-2

Fig. 1 shows the training area in a vehicle-repair garage. A trainee is practising wheel alignment on a car while a qualified mechanic observes from a safe distance. The garage manager will compare the number of vehicles returned by customers before and after the training programme.

(a) Identify one reason why the qualified mechanic should observe the trainee. [1]
(b) Explain one way the manager can use the returned-vehicle data to evaluate training. [2]
(c) Which one result would suggest that training has improved quality: an increase or a decrease in returned vehicles? [1]
(d) Explain one limitation of using only returned-vehicle data. [1]

Answer Details

(a) The qualified mechanic should observe so that they can correct mistakes, ensure safe working, or give feedback to the trainee. [1]

(b) The manager should compare the number of vehicles returned before training with the number returned after training [1]. If fewer vehicles are returned after the programme, this suggests wheel alignment and other repairs are more accurate, so quality has improved [1].

(c) A decrease in returned vehicles suggests improved quality. [1] Customers are less likely to return a vehicle when the repair has been done correctly.

(d) Returned vehicles can be affected by factors other than training, such as the age or type of cars repaired, or a lower number of jobs completed. [1] Therefore, returns alone do not prove that training caused a quality change.
