Question 1 Report

A sewing machine is used to stitch fabric in a textiles workshop. The machine converts the rotary motion of an electric motor into the up-and-down movement of the needle to pierce the fabric repeatedly.

(a) State the type of motion produced by the needle of the sewing machine as it moves up and down continuously. [1]

Answer Details

(a) The type of motion produced by the needle is reciprocating motion. [1]

Reciprocating motion is a repetitive linear (back-and-forth or up-and-down) movement along a straight line. The sewing machine needle moves up and down in a straight vertical path, reversing direction at the top and bottom of each stroke. This is distinct from oscillating motion (which follows an arc, like a pendulum) and rotary motion (continuous turning). Inside the machine, a cam or crank mechanism converts the continuous rotary motion of the electric motor into the reciprocating motion of the needle bar.
