0445-p4-acrylic-triangular-menu-holder

Fig 8 shows a portable menu holder used in a restaurant. The holder is made from a single piece of clear 3 mm acrylic sheet that has been heated and bent into a triangular prism shape so that it stands upright on a table. Each of the two angled faces has a narrow slot cut along the fold to allow a double-sided A5 printed menu card to slide in from the top. The acrylic is transparent so that the menu is visible from both sides of the table.

(a) Name the process used to bend the acrylic sheet into shape. [1]

(b) Give one reason why acrylic is a suitable material for a menu holder used in a restaurant. [1]

(c) Describe how the slots are cut into the acrylic sheet. [2]

(d) State one disadvantage of using acrylic for this product. [1]

[Total: 5 marks]

Answer Details

(a) The process used to bend the acrylic sheet into shape:

Line bending (also called strip bending or strip heating). [1] A strip heater softens the acrylic along a narrow line, allowing the sheet to be bent cleanly at that point to form the angled faces of the triangular prism shape.

(b) One reason why acrylic is suitable for a restaurant menu holder:

Acrylic is transparent, so the printed menu card is visible from both sides of the table without obstruction. [1] Other valid reasons include that acrylic is easy to wipe clean in a food service environment and that it is rigid enough to support the menu card and stand upright on the table.

(c) How the slots are cut into the acrylic sheet:

  1. The slot position and length are marked out on the acrylic surface using a chinagraph pencil or fine marker and a steel rule. [1]
  2. A series of small holes are drilled along the marked line to define the slot. The waste material between the holes is then removed using a coping saw or scroll saw, and the edges of the slot are filed smooth to allow the menu card to slide in cleanly. [1] Alternatively, a laser cutter can be used to cut a precise slot directly along the marked line in a single operation.

(d) One disadvantage of using acrylic for this product:

Acrylic scratches easily, so the surface of the menu holder may become cloudy and less transparent over time with regular handling and cleaning in a busy restaurant environment. [1] Other valid disadvantages include that acrylic can crack or shatter if dropped or knocked off the table, and that it is more expensive than simpler card or plastic alternatives.
