Nitrogen gas (N₂) is converted into ammonia (NH₃) by nitrogen-fixing bacteria such as Rhizobium found in the root nodules of legumes like beans and peas. Some free-living bacteria like Azotobacter and Clostridium also fix atmospheric nitrogen.
