Plants take in water from the soil through their roots and carbon dioxide from the air through tiny pores in their leaves. They use energy from sunlight to convert these raw materials into glucose (sugar), which they use as a source of energy and to build more complex organic molecules like proteins and fats. Therefore, green plants need inorganic substances, not mainly fluids, living materials or mainly gases, to produce their food.
