After Jesus was crucified, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a wealthy and influential member of the Jewish council, went to Pilate to request permission to take Jesus' body and give it a proper burial. Pilate agreed, and Joseph, along with Nicodemus, took Jesus' body down from the cross, wrapped it in linen, and placed it in a tomb that Joseph had recently had cut out of the rock for his own use. This tomb was located in a garden near the site of the crucifixion.
