The AFRC was a military junta that took control of the country after the overthrow of the civilian government in a coup. The council was made up of military officers who were appointed by the head of state, and they ruled the country by decree. The AFRC lasted from 1985 to 1993 and oversaw the transition from military rule to civilian rule in Nigeria.
