Question 1 Report

2.45 g potato cork borer cylinders sucrose solution balance

Table 1 shows the mass of potato cylinders after 40 minutes in sucrose solutions. Fig. 1 shows the cylinders being cut with a cork borer. All cylinders had the same starting mass and came from the same potato, so their plant cells were similar at the start.

Sucrose concentration / mol dm-3Mean percentage change in mass / %
0.00+12
0.20+4
0.40-1
0.60-9

(a) What is the percentage change in mass at 0.60 mol dm-3? [1]
(b) Describe the result for the cylinder in pure water. [1]
(c) Give the approximate sucrose concentration at which there is no net movement of water. [2]

Answer Details

(a) The percentage change in mass at \(0.60\text{ mol dm}^{-3}\) is \(-9\%\). [1]

(b) In pure water, the potato cylinder’s mass increases by \(12\%\). [1]

(c) No net movement occurs where the percentage mass change is zero. This lies between \(0.20\text{ mol dm}^{-3}\), where mass increased by \(4\%\), and \(0.40\text{ mol dm}^{-3}\), where mass decreased by \(1\%\). An appropriate estimate is about \(0.38\text{ mol dm}^{-3}\); \(0.4\text{ mol dm}^{-3}\) is also accepted. [2]
