The organ of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) established for peaceful settlement of disputes is the Commission of Mediation Conciliation and Arbitration. It was established as one of the key organs of the OAU in 1964 to promote peaceful settlement of disputes between member states and to prevent the escalation of conflicts into armed confrontations. The Commission is responsible for providing mediation, conciliation, and arbitration services to member states in order to peacefully resolve disputes. It played a critical role in resolving several conflicts on the African continent during its existence, and its functions were inherited by its successor organization, the African Union, after the OAU was dissolved in 2002.
