Entries for the egg-and-spoon race are split between younger pupils and older pupils in the ratio 5 : 3. There are 24 more younger pupils entered than older pupils this year.
- Work out the number of older pupils entered. (2)
- Work out the total number of pupils entered for the race. (2)
Answer Details
When a ratio's difference in parts is matched to an actual difference in pupils, dividing gives the value of one part, which then scales to find every group and the total entered.
- Younger to older is \(5:3\), a difference of \(2\) parts, matching the \(24\) pupil gap, so one part = \(24\div2=12\). Older pupils = \(12\times3=36\). [2 marks]
- Younger pupils = \(12\times5=60\). Total entered = \(60+36=96\) pupils. [2 marks]
