  1. Write down the torque reading shown on the dial. (1)
  2. The mechanic then re-torques a different bolt to 1.5 times this reading. Work out the new torque setting. (3)

Answer Details

This question tests reading a value from a semicircular dial scale and then multiplying that reading by a decimal scale factor.

  1. The dial runs from \(0\) to \(30\) Nm around a semicircle, labelled every \(5\) Nm. The needle points midway between the \(15\) and \(20\) marks, so the torque reading is \(18.5\) Nm [1 mark].
  2. Setting the new bolt to 1.5 times this reading gives \(18.5 \times 1.5 = 27.75\) Nm [3 marks].

On a dial with a wide labelled interval, such as every 5 units here, the needle's position relative to the two nearest labels is what determines the reading between them.
