Answer Details

This question tests multiplying decimals by first ignoring the decimal points, then placing the decimal point in the answer according to the total number of decimal places in the question.

Treat \(3.7\) and \(0.24\) as whole numbers by removing the decimal points: \(37 \times 24 = 888\) [1 mark]. Since \(3.7\) has 1 decimal place and \(0.24\) has 2 decimal places, the answer must have \(1 + 2 = 3\) decimal places [1 mark]. Placing the decimal point three digits from the right of 888 gives \(3.7 \times 0.24 = 0.888\) [1 mark].

Counting total decimal places across both numbers being multiplied, rather than trying to place the point by estimation, avoids errors when the digits themselves give no clue to size.
