Question 1 Report

A Starbucks franchise owner is reviewing a staff survey before choosing a new method of rewarding baristas. The research involved 48 employees from three city-centre cafés. Thirty employees selected flexible starting times as their preferred option, while 12 selected a monthly cash bonus and six selected extra product training. The owner wants to use the results because employee turnover has risen and experienced baristas are leaving for other businesses. A local Kraft Heinz office has offered some workers fixed hours, so the owner believes that flexible working may be important in this labour market. The following information will be used at a meeting with managers.

Employees who leave each café are absent for an average of 6 working days during their final month. Last year, eight baristas left the franchise. Answer all parts using the survey information.

(a) Define the term flexible working. [2]
(b) State two reasons why the owner carried out employee research before selecting a reward option. [4]
(c) Calculate the percentage of surveyed employees who selected flexible starting times. Show your working. [4]
(d) Define the term labour turnover. [4]
(e) State three possible benefits to the Starbucks franchise of reducing labour turnover. [6]

Answer Details

(a) Flexible working means employees have some choice over when or where they work rather than all working identical fixed hours. [2]

(b) Employee research identifies which reward employees prefer, helping the owner select a method more likely to motivate and retain staff. It also reduces the risk of spending money on a reward employees do not value. [4]

(c)

\[\frac{30}{48}\times100=62.5\%\]

\(62.5\%\) of surveyed employees selected flexible starting times. [4]

(d) Labour turnover is the number or proportion of employees leaving a business during a stated period of time. [4]

(e) Reducing turnover lowers recruitment and induction or training costs. Experienced baristas remain, so service may be faster and more consistent. It also reduces disruption and absence during employees' final month. Better service can encourage customers to return. Any three valid benefits are acceptable. [6]
