Question 1 Report

The diagrams below are illustrations of two organisms. Study them and answer question 3 (a) to (f)

(a)(i) Identify organisms A and B.

(ii) Name the parts labeled I to X.

(b) State one function each of the parts labeled VI, VIII, IX and X.

(c) Name the specific habitats of organisms A and B.

(d) State three structural adaptations of organism A to its mode of life.

(e)(i) State three structural similarities between organisms A and B.

(ii) State three structural differences between organisms A and B.

(f)(i) Name the class of organisms A and B.

(ii) State three reasons for the answer in (f) (i).

(g) State one biological importance of organism A.

Answer Details

(a)(i) Identity of the organisms: A is a butterfly (Papilio sp.); B is a housefly (Musca sp.).

(a)(ii) Parts labelled I to X:

  • I - head
  • II - antenna
  • III - thorax
  • IV - forewing
  • V - abdomen
  • VI - antenna
  • VII - head
  • VIII - compound eye
  • IX - wing
  • X - leg

(b) Function of parts VI, VIII, IX and X

  • VI (antenna): for feeling, and sensitivity to touch, smell and vibration.
  • VIII (compound eye): for sight or vision.
  • IX (wing): for flight and balancing during flight.
  • X (leg): for walking, crawling and running.

(c) Specific habitats

A (butterfly) lives in gardens and farms among flowering plants and trees. B (housefly) lives around latrines, refuse dumps, sewage, exposed food and decaying organic matter.

(d) Three structural adaptations of organism A (butterfly)

  • Large, broad wings for flight.
  • A long, thin proboscis for sucking nectar from flowers.
  • Long clubbed antennae and large compound eyes for sensitivity and wide vision.

(e)(i) Three structural similarities between A and B: both possess wings; both have the body divided into head, thorax and abdomen; both have a pair of antennae and a pair of compound eyes.

(e)(ii) Three structural differences between A and B

Organism A (butterfly)Organism B (housefly)
Broad wingsNarrow wings
Antennae clubbed and longAntennae not clubbed and short
Two pairs of wings, hind wings present; scales on wingsOne pair of wings, hind wings reduced to halteres; no scales

(f)(i) Class of A and B: Insecta.

(f)(ii) Three reasons: the body is divided into head, thorax and abdomen; there are three pairs of jointed legs on the thorax; there is one pair of antennae and a pair of compound eyes (with wings present).

(g) One biological importance of organism A (butterfly): it pollinates flowers (and also serves as a source of food for other organisms).
