(a) Explain the difference between 'use-by' and 'best-before'. [4]
Two marks per term (max 4):
- A use-by date is found on foods that go off quickly, such as meat, fish and dairy (1). The food should not be eaten after this date because it may be unsafe and cause food poisoning (1).
- A best-before date is found on foods with a longer shelf life, such as tinned goods and dried foods (1). The food is safe to eat after this date but may not be at its best quality in terms of taste, texture or appearance (1).
(b) State two reasons to check the label before buying. [2]
One mark each (max 2):
- To check the use-by or best-before date to make sure the product is still fresh and safe (1)
- To check for allergens in the ingredients list if the person has a food allergy (1)
- To compare the nutritional content with other similar products (1)
- To check the storage instructions to make sure the product can be stored correctly at home (1)
