[4] Two marks per disease (max 4): - Scurvy (1) - caused by a lack of vitamin C (1) - Rickets (1) - caused by a lack of vitamin D (1) - Anaemia (1) - caused by a lack of iron (1) - Night blindness (1) - caused by a lack of vitamin A (1) - Kwashiorkor/marasmus (1) - caused by a lack of protein/energy (1) - Goitre (1) - caused by a lack of iodine (1) (b) Explain why children in developing countries are more at risk of protein deficiency. [3] One mark for each valid point (max 3): - Families in developing countries may not be able to afford protein-rich foods such as meat, fish and dairy products (1) - The main diet may rely heavily on starchy staple foods such as rice or cassava which are low in protein (1) - There may be limited access to a variety of foods due to poor transport, drought or conflict (1) - Lack of education about nutrition may mean that parents do not know how to combine plant proteins to provide all essential amino acids (1)
