Iron:
- Needed to make extra blood for the mother and baby (1)
- Helps prevent anaemia which causes tiredness (1)
Folic acid:
- Helps prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida in the baby (1)
- Especially important in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy (1)
Calcium:
- Needed for the development of the baby's bones and teeth (1)
- If the mother does not get enough calcium, it will be taken from her own bones (1)
