(b)(i) State the function of saliva. [2]
- Saliva contains the enzyme amylase (1) which begins to break down starch into simpler sugars (1).
- Saliva also moistens food to make it easier to swallow (1).
(b)(ii) State the function of stomach acid. [2]
- Stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) kills bacteria that may be in the food (1).
- It provides the acidic conditions needed for the enzyme pepsin to work, which breaks down protein (1).
(c) Explain why food must be digested. [3]
One mark for each valid point (max 3):
- Food is made up of large, complex molecules such as proteins, fats and starches (1)
- These molecules are too large to pass through the wall of the small intestine into the blood (1)
- Digestion breaks them down into smaller, soluble molecules that can be absorbed and used by the body's cells (1)
