Question 1 Report
The scatter diagram shows the mass, in kg, and the cost, in dollars, of \(8\) parcels.
Work out the total cost of the three heaviest parcels.
This question tests reading points off a scatter diagram and then adding the values read.
Mass is on the horizontal axis, so the three heaviest parcels are the three points furthest to the right. Their costs are read off the vertical axis, giving \(\$26\), \(\$30\) and \(\$32\).
\[ 26 + 30 + 32 \] [M1]
\[ = 88 \] [A1]
The total cost of the three heaviest parcels is \(\$88\).
The trap is to pick the three most expensive parcels, that is the three highest points, rather than the three heaviest. On a scatter diagram the two variables usually correlate but are not identical, so always check which axis the question is selecting on: "heaviest" means read along the mass axis first, then go up to the point and across to the cost axis.
