Question 1 Report
The bar chart shows the number of visitors to a museum in each of five months.
Calculate the number of visitors in March as a percentage of the total number of visitors in these five months. Give your answer correct to \(1\) decimal place.
This is a "part as a percentage of the whole" question, where the whole is the five-month total, so the total has to be built from the chart before any percentage can be found.
Adding the heights of the five monthly bars gives a total of \(6000\) visitors [M1]
The March bar shows \(1430\) visitors, so
\[ \frac{1430}{6000}\times 100 \] [M1] \[ \frac{1430}{6000}=0.238333\ldots, \qquad 0.238333\ldots\times 100 = 23.8333\ldots \]Correct to \(1\) decimal place, the next digit is \(3\), so the tenths digit is unchanged.
March accounts for \(23.8\%\) of the visitors [A1]
If the five months were equal, each would be \(20\%\), so a value a little above \(20\%\) is sensible for a month with an above-average bar. Do not round the total or the division part way through; rounding \(1430\) to \(1400\) would give \(23.3\%\) and lose the accuracy mark.
