A solid cuboid measures \(2.5\) cm by \(3.6\) cm by \(8\) cm.
Work out its volume.
The volume of a cuboid is the product of its three dimensions. Here two of the measurements are given to one decimal place, so care with the arithmetic matters more than the method.
Multiplying the three dimensions: \[ 2.5 \times 3.6 \times 8 = 9 \times 8 = 72 \] so the volume is \(72\) cm\(^3\) [B1].
Taking \(2.5 \times 3.6 = 9\) first makes the calculation straightforward, which illustrates a general point: multiplication can be done in any order, so pair the numbers that combine most neatly. The unit is cm\(^3\) because three lengths in centimetres have been multiplied together. Note that the answer is exactly \(72\), not a rounded value, so no decimal places are needed.
