Question 1 Report

(a) State what is meant by a data backup. [1]

(b) Describe three different backup strategies that a company could use to protect its data. [3]

(c) Explain why it is important to store backup copies in a different physical location from the original data. [2]

Answer Details

(a) A data backup is a copy of data that is stored separately from the original so that it can be used to restore the original data if it is lost, corrupted or damaged. [1]

(b) Three different backup strategies:

  • Full backup: Copies all files and data each time a backup is performed. This is the most comprehensive but takes the longest time and uses the most storage space. [1]
  • Incremental backup: Copies only the files that have been changed or created since the last backup of any type. This is faster and uses less storage, but restoring requires the last full backup plus every incremental backup since then. [1]
  • Differential backup: Copies all files that have changed since the last full backup. It takes more storage than incremental but is faster to restore, since only the last full backup and the latest differential are needed. [1]

(c) Why backup copies should be stored in a different physical location:

  • If a disaster such as fire, flood or theft occurs at the main site, the backup data stored at another location will not be affected. [1]
  • This ensures the company can recover its data and resume operations even if the original storage is completely destroyed. Without off-site storage, both the original and backup data could be lost in the same event. [1]
